RGB Death Not Good For Republicans
It’s my opinion that the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg will prove to be a bad deal for Republicans. Hear me out.
Donald Trump has demanded her seat be filled immediately and Senate Republicans seem eager to accommodate. However, filling the seat serves to highlight their hypocrisy. In 2016 they refused to even hold a hearing on Merrick Garland after President Obama nominated him to fill the seat of Antonin Scalia. Remember, Scalia died in February and Republicans said it was too close to the November election. They argued “the American people needed to say” who would select the judge to fill Scalia’s seat. Ginsburg died in September, much closer to the election.
I believe such blatant hypocrisy will have consequences. Imagine if you will, a livid Democratic base. What do angry voters do? They vote!
It is not out of the realm of possibilities that the 2020 elections could result in Democrats winning control of the Senate and Presidency while retaining control of the House.
If Democrats take the Senate, they can hold up the Republican hypocrisy as justification to take off the gloves (so to speak). They could throughout the filibuster and pass meaning legislation. Think of healthcare, guns and climate change. Then, sprinkle in some racial equality and taxes on the rich. All done with Republicans loosing their minds on the sidelines.
Legislation that could last for decades. Republicans would need to take back the House, Senate and Presidency to undo whatever Democrats push through over the next few years. With the changing demographics in America, that seems like a tall order. I suppose another scenario would be to take the House and get a veto proof Senate, but that seems even harder to imagine.
Republicans may steal yet another Supreme Court seat. But for Democrats, it may prove to be the motivation and justification to finally move America forward.
